Kalisz is a city with the oldest written record – a settlement called ‘Kalisia’, situated on the ancient Amber Route, was first mentioned by Claudius Ptolemy in the 2nd century. In 2010 Kalisz will celebrate 1850th anniversary of this event. There are not many cities in Poland with such interesting history, monuments and tradition of co-existence of various cultures, customs and religions. Since the origins of Poland until present times Kalisz has belonged to the group of important centres of economy, education and culture not only in the region but also all around Poland.
At present Kalisz is a city with dynamic economy (aviation, food-processing, light and electro-mechanical industries), developed urban infrastructure, varied educational offer (e.g. three universities including Teaching-Artistic Institute of Adam Mickiewicz University or The State Vocational College). Kalisz has also significant role in culture – e.g. two-hundred-year-old Theatre of Wojciech Bogusławski and Kalisz Philharmonics.
It is a very interesting city – worth visiting and friendly. We start our virtual walk from the Marketplace.
