Guests from Hamm explore the Prosna river

As part of an international project, Robert Biermann and Tim Wegner, filmmakers and environmental enthusiasts from the German partner city of Hamm, along with Ewa Ćwiertnia, coordinator from the Internationaler Club Hamms, visited Kalisz to be able to gather material for a series of documentary films showing the biodiversity of the river systems of their hometown and its sister cities.

At the city hall, the guests met with Krystian Kinastowski, the Mayor of the City of Kalisz, representatives of the Department of Municipal Management and Environmental Protection of the Kalisz Municipal Office, and Maciej Garbowicz, founder and head of the "Prosna od źródeł" group.

- A river is a huge potential for any city. Kalisz, for decades, failed to use this potential. That's why in recent years we have begun to restore the Prosna River for the residents. It has become a place of recreation for Kalisz citizens and visitors from other cities. Here they go kayaking, water biking, SUP-ing. They walk, run, cycle and rollerblade along the banks. We have also started the construction of the Kalisz boulevards, the first section of which was built by the Most Teatralny. The river and its surroundings have come to life! At the end of every summer we organize the Prosna River Festival, during which athletes from all over the country compete on a triathlon course right by the river, and in the evenings we all listen to live concerts by musicians performing on a stage floating on the Prosna. Finally we are taking advantage of the full potential of our river! - Mayor Krystian Kinastowski said.

During their visit, the members of the delegation were able to observe the city's coexistence with the river on many occasions. Downtown, they saw the operation of the Small Hydroelectric Power Plant and the Kalisz Marina. They also went to examine the upper section of the Prosna river in Żydów and the confluence with the Swędrnia river. They were shown the influence of local aquatic flora and fauna on the modern shape of the city, as well as the natural factors that determined the location of the settlement in Zawodzie.

The German guests took part in a meeting with students of the Adam Asnyk High School in Kalisz, who presented the perspective of the young generation on what should be treasured in the local nature of our city. After getting acquainted with the history of Kalisz by visiting the multimedia exhibition in the city hall, the delegation also took part in a unique event - planting of the successor to the Asnyk Oak tree in Kalisz City Park.

A documentary film about the diversity of flora and fauna in the rivers of the Kalisz region will be the final product of the international project. Its premiere is planned for 2025.
