Honoring the soldiers who were laid to rest in Szczypiorno

On Friday, Mayor Krystian Kinastowski and Deputy Mayor Mateusz Podsadny visited the Ukrainian Military Cemetery in Szczypiorno with Mykhail Simashkevych, Head of the Kamianets Region and long-time Mayor of Kamianets-Podilskyi.

The Ukrainian cemetery in Szczypiorno was established in 1914, when soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic were resettled in camps near Kalisz by German order. Using their own funds, they took the cemetery under their care in 1923, tidied it up and restored it, as well as erected an obelisk - a memorial to all those who fell fighting for Ukrainian independence. It is estimated that more than a thousand Ukrainian soldiers may have been buried in the cemetery.

Now that the Ukrainian people are once again facing oppression, Mykhailo Simashkevych, with a delegation of Kamianets Region representatives, came to Kalisz to pay tribute to the previous generations of soldiers and place flowers at the obelisk. During his visit, he spoke with Mayor Krystian Kinastowski and Deputy Mayor Mateusz Podsadny about the current situation in Ukraine, especially in Kalisz's partner city Kamianets-Podilskyi, and again thanked them for the assistance provided by Poland and Kalisz.

Renovations are currently underway at the Ukrainian Military Cemetery to restore it as a military necropolis. The plans include making new crosses, restoring the obelisk, paving the ground, and installing a surveillance system. The City of Kalisz is carrying out this project with co-financing from the  National Institute for Historic Preservation [Narodowy Instytut Konserwacji Zabytków] under a grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
