From Hamm to Kalisz – on the trail of history

Fourteen students from the Märkisches Gymnasium in Hamm, Germany were welcomed in Kalisz today. As part of a history project within the Erasmus programme, they and their teachers are spending 10 days visiting memorial sites in Poland. They have already been to Kraków, Oświęcim, and Warsaw and today they are making a stop in our city.

Deputy mayor Grzegorz Kulawinek met the young people from Hamm in the reception hall of the City Hall.

-I welcome you to Kalisz in the beautiful Ignacy Adam Bujnicki Reception Hall. Kalisz can be proud of being the oldest Polish city in written record, having the oldest city park, and one of the oldest theatres in all of Poland - said deputy mayor Grzegorz Kulawinek.

During their stay in Kalisz, the students spent several hours in the company of their peers from the Adam Asnyk Secondary School. While exploring the school, they learned about the Polish school system, took part in history lessons, participated in a workshop on the culture of remembrance, and visited exhibitions and memorial sites of the Jewish people in Kalisz. The visitors then enjoyed a sightseeing tour of the city prepared by the students and teachers of "Asnyk".

In the afternoon, the German guests had a look at the multimedia exhibition in the City Hall and admired the panoramic view of the city from the observation deck of the tower.
