St. Nicholas Cathedral

One of the oldest churches in the city, founded after the year 1253 by the Duke Bolesław the Pious, rebuilt a lot of times. In the chancel there is a gothic starry vault. In the baroque high altar from 1662 there used to be a famous painting by Peter Paul Rubens "Descent from the cross", which burnt in unexplained circumstances in 1973. It was replaced by a copy. The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows (also known as the "Polish" chapel or as "Under the Eagles" chapel) is decorated with Włodzimierz Tetmajer’s stained glass and polychromy (1909). The church was elevated to the rank of cathedral in 1992.
