He was the son of Ludwik Scholtz, a famous Kalisz industrialist and Malwina of Rogozińscy. When Stefan turned 12, he started studying at the German gymnasium in Wrocław. There he met Klemens Tomczek - his friend and later companion in an expedition to Cameroon.
